See you at the NPW this month

National Payroll Week salutes payroll professionals who play such a vital role behind the scenes.

The Canadian Payroll Association and its members created national Payroll Week in 1995. The mission was to build awareness in the business and government sectors, and with the general public, on the vital and demanding role of payroll and the individuals who work in the profession.

Canada’s seventh annual National Payroll Week (NPW) is Sept. 17 to 21. Building on the success of last year’s program, NPW is expected to establish benchmarks for participation and recognition from coast to coast.

Payroll plays a vital role in the daily operation of an organization and, as last year’s national advertising campaign pointed out, helps make the “good things in life” possible. The nature of payroll is confidential; it is often a function that is performed in quiet confidence behind the scenes and it receives little attention in the workplace, even though it is mission critical with every person in the organization requiring a paycheque.

With the continuous introduction of legislative and regulatory reform impacting payroll practices, the expertise of today’s payroll managers is called upon for the planning of financial and administrative services programs.

What is the Canadian payroll community hoping to achieve with NPW? NPW is an ideal opportunity for an HR specialist to educate workplace colleagues about payroll practitioners’ role in the day-to-day operation of a business. It’s also a chance to have a bit of fun and put faces to the names of the hard-working individuals whose job it is to issue employees’ pay cheques.

NPW provides a focal point to build awareness of how processes are changing and becoming more efficient and complicated. Automation, employee self-service and advances in systems technology are significantly changing payroll. At the same time payroll is responsible for an increasing amount of legislative and compliance issues.

Today’s payroll professionals are leading the way in discovering new ways to save money and increase efficiency, while at the same time keeping fully abreast of the constant legislative changes that affect payroll.

National Payroll Week was so successful in Canada that it quickly gained international popularity. The United States celebrated its first NPW in 1996 and the United Kingdom in 1998. In Canada, National Payroll Week has been officially proclaimed and/or recognized in most major cities.

In addition to the promotional items, another national advertising and promotional campaign will build on last year’s “This moment brought to you by payroll” theme and the NPW national quiz started last year will be expanded. The national quiz tests the knowledge of payroll (and other subjects) of payroll practitioners across the country. Payroll practitioners from the same company will pit their knowledge against other companies’ payroll departments, with the title of the “smartest payroll department in Canada” awaiting the winner.

The purpose of the quiz is to recognize the breadth and depth of knowledge necessary in payroll’s function. This again illustrates the volume and complexity of legislation, federally and provincially, of which practitioners’ need to keep on top.

National Payroll week salutes the payroll profession in a variety of ways that provides for both celebration and recognition.
