Weekly earnings rise to $677.97, hourly $17.17
Average weekly earnings for employees in July rose 0.3 per cent to $677.97 compared to June, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada.
Compared to July 2001, average weekly earnings were up 1.8 per cent. The strongest gains were in health and social services, up 4.5 per cent, while education (3.7 per cent) and transport and warehousing (3.5 per cent) posted significant gains. Finance and insurance was the only industry to record a decline, down 1.3 per cent, partly because of lower bonuses and special payments.
Average hourly earnings for hourly-paid employees stood at $17.17 in July, up 0.2 per cent from June and 1.7 per cent higher than July 2001. The average number of hours worked in a week edged up from 31.7 to 31.8 because of an increase in overtime hours.
