Warning from HR: You're calling in sick too much

School board in Windsor, Ont. starts contacting staff who are chronically absent in effort to reduce absenteeism — and it's working

Absenteeism rates are dropping at a school board in Windsor, Ont. after the board implemented a policy to raise awareness of chronic absenteeism.

The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board started an attendance program last year in response to skyrocketing costs associated with high absenteeism among all employee groups.

The program is quite simple. The board's human resources department began contacting every staff member who had a history of being chronically absent and who appeared to be continuing that trend into 2002. They were warned by HR their attendance was being monitored.
