Family gatherings popular, office parties not

Most Canadians love getting together with family over the holidays, but only 55 per cent enjoy office parties

The majority of Canadians love Christmas gatherings with their families, but it’s an entirely different scenario when it comes to the office holiday party — even though most workers attend them — according to a new survey.

While 92 per cent look forward to family gatherings, only 55 per cent said they like office Christmas parties and 33 per cent said they dislike celebrating the holidays with co-workers.

Workers in Alberta were most likely to enjoy an office Christmas party while Quebec staff seemed least attached to them.

Alcohol and sexual harassment

Of workers who enjoy going to Christmas parties, nearly half (49 per cent) think people drink too much alcohol and 21 per cent said people are sexually harassed.

Staff who said they didn’t like office parties were more likely to think excessive alcohol consumption (65 per cent) and sexual harassment (39 per cent) were problems.

The study was conducted by Leger Marketing through telephone interviews among a representative sample of 1,529 English or French speaking Canadians, 18 years of age or older between Dec. 3 and Dec. 8, 2002. The maximum margin of error is plus or minus 2.5 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
