Nearly one-half (47 per cent) of Canadian firms are not giving staff Christmas bonuses, but 68 per cent will be hosting a Christmas party, according to a Careerbuilder survey.
Accountants are in line for the biggest bonuses, with 17 per cent of employers in the sector saying they are giving bigger bonuses than they were last year, followed by: IT (16 per cent), operations and sales (13 per cent) and HR and marketing (12 per cent).
For those who are getting a bonus, 12 per cent of employers are giving a bigger Christmas bonus than last year, and 32 per cent are giving one the same size, found the survey of 501 full- and part-time workers.
For those employers having a Christmas party, 14 per cent are holding a bigger bash than they did last year, and nearly one-half (47 per cent) are holding one the same size.
“Christmas is a time for festive cheer within the workplace and it’s important to celebrate the successes of the year just gone. Even though many employers won’t be holding a Christmas party this year, it’s positive that the employers who are will be hosting a bigger party than last year. It’s important to for both employers and employees to attend workplace socials to build strong working relationships which will result in a more successful future for the business” said Ryan Lazar, director of CareerBuilder Canada.
