Poll puts travel writer on top of list of dream jobs for Canadians looking for work

Whether it’s a love of travel, love of writing, or maybe just dreams of escape, a poll of job seekers showed the number one choice for best job in Canada was travel writer.

The poll, conducted by online job board Workopolis, showed Canadians on the hunt for a new job were split on their second choice between playing the role of doughnut magnate as chief executive officer of Tim Hortons or spending their days as a movie reviewer.

A more challenging job market

The poll also asked job seekers about their experiences looking for work and found that the job market has become more challenging in the past two years.

Job seekers reported that compared to a year earlier, 35 per cent of employers expect to pay a smaller salary for the same position or level of qualifications. Nearly half of the respondents (44 per cent) said the job search process has been hard on their self-esteem.

“The job market has become more competitive over the last couple of years,” said Pat Sullivan, president of Workopolis. “Job seekers need to remain positive and flexible to succeed in securing the position they want.”

The results are based on about 1,800 responses to the online poll posted on workopolis.com between June 13 and Aug. 25, 2003.
