Ontario focusing on safety in health care, manufacturing sectors with two new panels
The Ontario government has set up two more safety action groups, focusing on preventing injuries in the health care and manufacturing sectors
It follows the province’s announcement last month that a construction safety action group was being set up in response to an “alarming” increase in the number of construction deaths.
Manufacturing panel of the Minister’s Health and Safety Action Group
A panel of experts has been put together to establish priorities to reduce injuries, ensure proper policies are in place and promote safety through education, training, regulation and enforcement in the manufacturing sector, according to Labour Minister Chris Bentley.
“The manufacturing sector is the backbone of Ontario’s economy,” said Bentley. “Yet workers are still being injured and killed on the job. There is tremendous room for reducing injury and illness rates in manufacturing workplaces if we work together and harness existing knowledge.”

Health care panel of the Minister’s Health and Safety Action Group
Almost 2,000 nurses are currently off work on long-term disability, costing the system about $500 million per year, said Bentley.
The panel will initially focus on acute care centres, but could expand to include long-term care, rehabilitation and other health care facilities, he said.
