Computer glitch hits Ontario's Ministry of Labour

Computer failure results in loss of incoming e-mail for almost 36 hours at a number of agencies

A computer glitch hit Ontario’s Ministry of Labour — and a number of related government agencies — last week.

As a result of the computer failure, e-mails received by the Ontario Ministry of Labour and the agencies listed below have been lost.

E-mails sent between 9 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 16, and 6 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18, have been lost. The government said anyone who sent an e-mail to the ministry or one of these agencies during this period should resubmit.

Affected e-mails may have included legally required notices, time-sensitive correspondence, job applications or inquiries on ministry positions currently advertised, including health and safety inspector positions.

“All affected e-mails were destroyed by the computer failure,” the government said in a press release. “There is no electronic record of these messages. However, confidential information that may have been contained in e-mails or attachments has not been compromised.”

E-mails sent to other Ontario government, ministries, offices or agencies have not been affected by this computer failure.

Affected offices and agencies

The following offices and agencies were hit by the computer failure:

•All Ministry of Labour offices across Ontario;
•Ontario Labour Relations Board;
•Grievance Settlement Board;
•Pay Equity Commission;
•Office of the Employer Advisor;
•Office of the Worker Advisor;
•Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario;
•Pay Equity Hearings Tribunal; and
