Qatar faces its first strike

Workers from India, Pakistan and Nepal protest salary and living conditions

Foreign construction workers lodged Qatar’s first official strike last week.

About 600 workers, mostly from India, Pakistan and Nepal, stopped working on Friday to protest their salary and living conditions.

Workers have only been allowed to form trade unions and strike since 2004 when the country changed its labour law.

Qatar became only the third country in the Middle East, behind Kuwait and Bahrain, to afford workers these rights.

Workers from four private Qatari companies and one United Arab Emirates-based firm are involved in the labour dispute, which company officials have said they expect to resolve this week.
