Manitoba Wage Schedules for Construction Industry Changing

Wage schedules for the province's construction industry will go up in two stages, beginning June 1, 2006, Labour and Immigration Minister Nancy Allan recently announced.

The increases follow a review of wages and hours of work provisions under The Construction Industry Wages Act by joint employer-labour panel covering urban and rural construction. It will be the first time that the wage schedules for many of the job classifications have increased in close to 15 years.

The wage schedules for construction projects in Winnipeg, for major projects in the province (i.e., 25,000 square feet and over), and in rural Manitoba will go up June 1, 2006 and October 1, 2006. For heavy construction, the wage schedules will increase on June 1, 2006 and again on January 1, 2007.

The government is currently revising regulations under the Act to incorporate the changes. Please note that The Construction Industry Wages Act states that no regulations made under the Act can reduce the employees' wages to be lower than the amount they would be entitled to under the province's Employment Standards Code.
