Working with doctors to manage employee illness

For a manager, news that an employee is off work is never good. Ensuring a quick and healthy return to work is vital, and that requires an effective partnership among the employee, the employer, the union (if applicable) and the doctor.

Often, the doctor’s only source of information is the employee and, in most instances, the doctor will not be familiar with the work site nor have time to obtain additional information. The HR professional can help by informing the doctor about work site and job requirements, as well as other factors that have a bearing on return to work, such as job accommodation.
