Irish smoking ban a success

Businesses would also like mandatory workplace defibrillators

The overwhelming majority of Irish businesses in the south-west area of the country believe the smoking ban has had a positive effect.

A survey done by FACT, a health and safety company, found that 97 of 100 County Kerry businesses surveyed believed the ban had resulted in an improvement in the health of Irish people.

Specifically, 93 respondents believed the ban would help reduce heart disease and strokes.

Health and safety is a concern for most employers and 95 of the companies surveyed said heart defibrillators should be compulsory in every workplace, with some staff members trained to use it.

However, nearly half of the respondents said complicated legislation made it hard for their workplace to comply with health and safety requirements.
