Quebec sports company supports Operation Bike-to-Work
A Quebec sports company will pay its employees $5 a day to ride their bikes to work during the week of May 28 to June 1.
Louis Garneau Sports, based in St.-Augustin-de-Desmaures about 16 kilometres west of Quebec City, is offering the subsidy in support Vélo Quebec's Operation Bike-to-Work, which encourages employers to support employees in biking to work throughout the year.
Vélo Quebec is a not-for-profit organization that encourages Quebeckers to use bicycles for transportation as a way to improve their own health and well-being, as well as to protect the environment.
Citing a recent study by Statistics Canada that found employees who commute to work by bicycle are most likely to enjoy their commute (59 per cent versus only 38 per cent of those who drive and 23 per cent of those who take public transit), Vélo Quebec says cycling to work is good for employers and employees alike.
With hiking gas prices, cycling is a good way to save money and reduce greenhouse gases, said Louis Garneau, owner of Louis Garneau Sports.
"We can all make a difference with small, individual actions, especially for the protection of the environment," he said.
In addition to the $5 incentive, Louis Garneau Sports will provide secure, in-door parking for employees' bikes. The company is also encouraging employees to donate their $5 to environmental charities.
