Workers choose perks over compensation

Nearly 60 per cent of workers who responded to a recent workopolis.com poll said they would rather have more vacation time (59.1 per cent) than more money (40.9 per cent).

They also said they would rather be able to work from home sometimes (60.9 per cent) than get more pay (39.1 per cent).

Other perks, however, ranked far behind money.
(Money: 63.6 per cent, car: 36.4 per cent)

When respondents were asked: “What one, non-monetary perk would you like to get?” they cited:

•flexible hours;
•cell phone and/or a personal digital assistant (PDA);
•company car;
•profit-sharing;
•stock options;
•fitness memberships; and
•child care facilities.

Other suggestions were: hockey or theatre tickets, grocery coupons, free lunches, massages, nap time and even “a thank-you every so often.”

Workopolis.com, which conducted the research, is one of Canada’s largest job boards.
