Innovation reaps rewards

CSTD honours organizations for training programs that demonstrate originality, contribute to performance improvement

The Canadian Society for Training and Development (CSTD) has presented its new WOW award to four organizations. The award recognizes workplace learning programs that demonostrate originality and contribute to performance improvement.

The awards were presented last night at the annual CSTD conference at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel in downtown Toronto.

CSTD introduced the WOW Award this year to its Canadian Awards for Training Excellence program. The purpose of the award is to recognize training processes or products that put ideas, knowledge and technology to work in a novel way that brings about a significant improvement in performance in the workplace.

And the winning programs are:

City of Toronto
Refresher III

How do you retrain all 10,000 Toronto taxicab drivers on new rules, processes and safety equipment, and then update them on route planning and tourism? A team of City of Toronto training and development specialists from the Municipal Licensing and Standards Division Training Unit, under the guidance of Glenn Steeves, manager of training, did just that, using interactive videos, experiential learning activities and live demonstrations.

Dofasco
Equipment Reliability

Role playing, rehearsals and games — in manufacturing, you say? Plant shutdowns either succeed or fail, but due to an innovative approach, success is just a matter of learning how to play the game — literally. The Shutdown Delivery Management system is used to assist in knowledge transfer and support Dofasco’s manufacturing goals. To introduce and familiarize employees with the system, a unique training program was delivered in the form of a role-playing game. The training program uses team competition to actively teach the main tenets of the system and apply the methodologies and principles of the equipment reliability process.

Glentel
Training Excellence on a Shoestring

Glentel Retail, with its three banners, WirelessWave, T Booth and Wireless Etc., has grown more than 450 per cent in the past four years in the very competitive world of cellular retailers. Its culture of learning and development includes innovative, interactive learning and weekly performance coaching of all employees.

Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario (HRPAO)
HR eSource

A practical human resources e-learning solution was developed in both French and English for effective workforce management. It is especially useful for line managers and small business leaders in both unionized and non-unionized organizations.
