Waitress axed for shaving head for cancer

Woman's bald head violated restaurant's standards: Owner

Stacey Fearnall's shaved head raised more than $2,700 for cancer but cost her her job as a waitress at an Owen Sound, Ont., restaurant.

Fearnall shaved her head as part of a Cops for Cancer fundraiser. When the 36-year-old went in to work at Nathaniels restaurant with her head shorn, she was sent home after refusing to wear a wig. Later, when she was told not to bother coming back in.

The restaurant's owner and chef Dan Hilliard told the Toronto Star the restaurant has certain standards, including prohibiting male staff from wearing earrings and requiring employees to keep their hair at an acceptable length.

The restaurant owners told Fearnall before the event they wouldn't be pleased if she participated. However, Fearnall said she wasn't given a clear answer about whether or not she would lose her job if she decided to shave her head.

She took part in the fundraiser because her father died of cancer five years ago and a cousin and close friend are currently battling the disease.

Fearnall will be able to return to work once her hair grows back, said Hilliard. However, her husband John told The Star Fearnall is not likely to return.
