Economy grows by 36,000 jobs

Unemployment rate unchanged in April at 8 per cent

After months of steady declines in employment, the number of jobs grew by 36,000 in April, according to Statistics Canada.

These new jobs, all full time and mostly in self-employment, helped keep the unemployment rate unchanged from March at eight per cent.

Employment gains were seen in the following industries: information, culture and recreation; business, building and other support services; "other services"; and agriculture.

Employment was unchanged in manufacturing and construction.

All of April's job growth occurred in Quebec, which grew by 22,000 jobs, and British Columbia, which grew 17,000 jobs.

Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador saw net job losses of 4,100 and 2,800, respectively. Employment was mostly unchanged in other provinces.

Employment gains were spread between adult men aged 25 and over and older women aged 55 and over.
