How HR can be seen, heard – and valued (Guest commentary)

Start by understanding what strategic means, then work on business acumen

Human resources professionals everywhere are asking, “How do I get invited to the executive table?” And the answer is always the same: You need to be seen as strategic by senior management — as a business partner or, better yet, as a “business driver.”

But what does that mean and how do you make it happen, especially given the restricted resources at most companies?

Start by looking at what being strategic really means — and there certainly are plenty of definitions out there. In business terms, it means integrating HR management strategies and systems to achieve a company’s overall mission, strategies and success while ensuring employees’ and stakeholders’ needs are met.
