The Canadian Auto Workers is calling for national regulations on ergonomics to prevent repetitive strain injuries caused by work.
The union launched the Ergonomics Regulations Campaign, calling on the Ontario and federal governments to make mandatory regulations requiring employers to protect employees by using ergonomic principles when designing workstations and jobs.
Similar voluntary regulations already exist in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, and similar regulations have been recommended in Newfoundland by the Task Force for Reviewing Workers’ Compensation.
According to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board in Ontario, sprains and strains accounted for most injury claims filed between 1996 and 1999.
