Consultations for foreign worker protection underway in Saskatchewan

New legislation aims to increase protection during recruitment, immigration

The government of Saskatchewan is conducting consultations across the province regarding a new legislative framework for foreign worker protection.

The Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration is conducting consultations over the next three weeks to engage stakeholders and gather input, said the government. Consultations with employers, foreign workers, settlement advisors, consultants, lawyers and other key stakeholders will take place in Saskatoon, Regina, Swift Current and Yorkton.

Although there is legislation in place to protect workers in the province, the laws may not adequately protect foreign workers who could be vulnerable to unfair treatment particularly during recruitment and immigration phases, it said.

"We want to consult with newcomers, employers, citizens and other stakeholders to explore issues facing foreign workers and develop solutions to protect their rights," said Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Rob Norris. "And by working to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all people in Saskatchewan, we will encourage foreign workers to consider Saskatchewan and reinforce our reputation as a great place to live, work and raise a family."

Interested members of the public who wish to participate in the consultation can complete the electronic survey online at www.saskimmigrationcanada.ca.

The final report on the results of the consultations will be submitted to the minister at the end of May.
