Canadian Staffing Index sees year-over-year increase in May

May marks 8th consecutive month with index above 100

The Canadian Staffing Index shows positive growth with a year-over-year increase in May, according to the Association of Canadian Search, Employment and Staffing Services (ACSESS).

The Canadian Staffing Index was 107 in May, as compared to the industry value of 100 when the Index was first introduced four years ago. The May value represents a strong 26 per cent year-over-year increase from May 2011.

May is the eight consecutive month with the index above 100, and shows double digit year-over-year growth.

"This clearly shows that the industry is now solidly above pre-recession levels in terms of the volume of demand for temporary staffing,” said Timothy Landhuis, research analyst at Staffing Industry Analysts.

The reading of 107 demonstrates the continued resiliency of the Canadian economy despite the small four per cent sequential decrease from the index value of 111 in April, said ACSESS.

"Given all of the uncertainty in the headlines surrounding global financial markets it is not surprising to see some pullback in the number of temporary hours worked,” said ACSESS president Bryan Toffey.

While Canada is not immune from the world economies, this report is a positive indicator for current staffing and employment trends, said ACSESS.
