Flexibility, mobility, independence important to workers: Survey

One-half working at alternative locations weekly

Modern workers increasingly view flexibility, mobility and independence as crucial components of their work life, according to a report by Intelligent Office. What most companies and workers would have seen as luxuries in the past, many workers now view as essential to their work satisfaction.

People are looking for a new balance — nearly one-half of the respondents want a work hard/play hard work-life balance, found the report, based on surveys of more than 3,000 people in Canada and the United States. Not a single respondent aspired to be a corporate executive.

One-half (47 per cent) of Canadians working in alternative locations said they do so on a weekly basis or more, versus 22 per cent in the United States. Seventy per cent of respondents work from alternative locations on a regular basis, with 22 per cent visiting on a weekly basis.

Almost one-third of people are spending one hour or more per day on social media at work, found the Work IQ Report 2013

Two-thirds (65 per cent) of respondents want the rights to download, install, modify or otherwise control their work computer. Sixty-one per cent want to use a device that is more mobile than a desktop while at work. Additionally, one-third want to work for a company that allows them to use their own technology.
