EI recipients down in October

Quebec sees largest declines


The number of people receiving employment insurance benefits decreased slightly in October, according to Statistics Canada.

The latest EI data found beneficiaries edged down 0.5 per cent to 809,600.

In October, the number of EI beneficiaries declined in one-half of the provinces, with the largest drop (2,200) in Quebec.

While the number of beneficiaries was up by 4,200 in Ontario, it was still lower than in June.

Since October 2008, the number of beneficiaries increased by an average of 41,100 every month to a peak of 829,300 in June. Since then the numbers have declined slightly.
