9 professionals recognized at British Columbia's annual conference
Top HR professionals were honoured at the annual BC Human Resources Management Association (BC HRMA) conference in Vancouver.
Winners include several individual professionals and an HR team who have made significant contributions to the HR profession in the province.
Award of Excellence: HR Professional of the Year
Diane Sullivan, CHRP, vice president of human resources at BC Safety Authority
The award is given to an individual who contributes to an organization by achieving significant business results and by demonstrating exceptional leadership both as a personal and professional role model.
Sullivan was chosen as this year’s award recipient for her work transforming the former arm of the provincial government into an independent, self-supporting entity with strong entrepreneurial traits. Working with the executive team, Sullivan led the culture change initiative, and not only revitalized the role of HR but yielded numerous organizational improvements.
Award of Excellence: Innovation
HR team from BC Hydro
The award recognizes an individual or team that has successfully applied a progressive human resources program to address a corporate challenge or opportunity.
The HR team at BC Hydro consists of Karen Green, manager of learning and development; Rick Milone, manager of total rewards; Agnes Terebka, HR advisor for recruitment; and Ashley Bennington, CHRP, HR advisor for workforce planning.
This team was nominated for their Generational Diversity report, which provided key insights regarding employee engagement within their generational pools. This work moved the function of human resources forward as a strategic partner in the organization and as a result, the team was chosen as this year’s award recipient.
Rising Star Award
Rene McComber, HR advisor at the Vancouver Aquarium
The award recognizes and honors a BC HRMA member who is lighting the HR community on fire.
McComber was chosen due to her considerable input into the organization’s HR functions, especially at such an early point in her career. In addition, McComber is being recognized for her efforts toward increased staff engagement and cost savings for the aquarium.

The Fellow Certified Human Resources Professional (FCHRP) is a prestigious title that aims to recognize the most exceptional CHRPs in Canada who have made outstanding contributions to the profession of HR and their communities.
