Second consecutive month with year-over-year growth of more than 4 per cent
Average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees are on an upswing, hitting $864.13 in September, according to Statistics Canada.
This is a 4.3-per-cent increase from September 2009 and the second consecutive month with year-over-year growth of more than four per cent
Some of this increase is attributable to the 0.9-per-cent increase in the number of hours worked from September 2009 to September 2010. The remainder of the increase reflects changes in the composition of employment by industry, changes in occupations within industry, job experience and wage growth.
The pace of growth in earnings has been increasing in recent months. September marked the sixth consecutive month in which the year-over-year increase surpassed three per cent. In contrast, year-over-year growth was below two per cent for most of 2009.
Forestry, logging and support, and mining and quarrying, and oil and gas extraction saw the largest increases in average weekly earnings at more than 11 per cent each.
However, there were declines in information and cultural industries (-7.5 per cent) and in management of companies and enterprises (-0.5 per cent).
Average weekly earnings increased in most provinces from September 2009 to September 2010, with above-average growth in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Alberta and Quebec.
Year-over-year growth was slowest in Manitoba and Prince Edward Island, while earnings declined slightly in New Brunswick.
