Retail businesses in P.E.I. can now open on Sundays

But Boxing Day a holiday so shops must stay closed

As of Dec. 24, employers are now allowed to open at 12 noon on Sundays year-round in Prince Edward Island after changes to legislation received royal assent.

With the new Retail Business Holidays Act, retail businesses also must remain closed on designated holidays. That means businesses will have to stay closed for Boxing Day 2010 as it is a designated holiday that falls on a Sunday.

The designated retail holidays listed in the Retail Business Holidays Act are Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Islander Day, Labour Day, New Year’s Day, Remembrance Day and Thanksgiving Day. Regardless of the day of the week on which these holidays fall, retail businesses are not permitted to be open.

The first Sunday a retail business can open under the newly amended legislation will be Jan. 2, 2011.
