More Ontario civil servants earning $100,000 or more

'Sunshine list' grew to 63,671 in 2009

The number of Ontario civil servants who earn more than $100,000 increased by 18 per cent in 2009, according to the province's "sunshine list."

Last year, 63,671 people earned $100,000 or more, an increase of 10,265 from 2008.

Former Ontario Power Generation president and CEO James Hankinson, whose salary, bonus and severance totalled $2,152,748, topped the list. Second was his successor, Tom Mitchell, at $1,042,567, followed by Art Gallery of Ontario CEO Matthew Teitelbaum, who earned $981,013 in salary and bonuses last year.

Hydro One CEO Laura Formusa came fourth with earnings of $977,646.

While police, senior bureaucrats and hospital CEOs are on the list, so are municipal workers, nurses and transit workers who put in a lot of overtime in 2009 due to work stoppages and labour shortages.

Since 1996, the province has required organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to disclose the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in a calendar year.

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996, applies to organizations such as the Government of Ontario, Crown agencies, municipalities, hospitals, boards of public health, school boards, universities, colleges, Hydro One, Ontario Power Generation, and other public sector employers who receive a significant level of funding from the provincial government.
