One-quarter of Canadian CFOs seeing improvement in employee morale: Survey

The still-uncertain economy hasn't dampened the spirits of many workers at Canadian organizations

The still-uncertain economy hasn't dampened the spirits of many workers at Canadian organizations. One in four (25 per cent) CFOs said morale has improved at their firms, according to a survey by Accountemps.

"Maintaining team morale should be an ongoing priority for employers," said Kathryn Bolt, Canadian president of Accountemps. "Companies that recognize staff and uphold employee motivation foster loyalty among their teams, enhanced productivity and greater job satisfaction."

Sixty-eight per cent of the 270 CFO surveyed said the mood among their teams has not changed.

And fewer than one in 10 (seven per cent) CFOs said employee morale has worsened in the last 12 months.

According to Accountemps, to help boost morale in an organization, management should consider:

  • thanking staff for jobs well done
  • making sure employees have the support tools they need
  • maintaining strong employee communication with an open-door policy
  • sharing information about the company’s performance
  • encouraging employees to be creative and innovative
  • recognizing employees for their contributions to the organization’s success.

"Firms understand the extra efforts staff have made in recent years — often without being rewarded financially,” said Bolt. “As a result, organizations are looking for ways to help employees, such as by offering perks that aid their career development or give them more control over their schedules."
