Chinese express shipping company Shentong Express (STO Express) has begun using robots to sort packages, in the hope of getting ahead in the express industry.

According to the company, in a warehouse of 2,000 square metres (2,392 square yards), the robots can sort 18,000 packages per hour, saving up to 70 per cent on human labour.

The company has employed the robots in warehouses in the cities of Tianjin, Yiwu, and Linyi since March of 2016, STO Express said.

STO Express collaborates with Zhejiang Libiao Robot Ltd Co in developing such sorting robots, which can self-recharge and sort packages weighing up to five kilograms (11 pounds).
