Bombardier, Dalhousie, Winnipeg Airport among Canada's Top 100 Employers

Record number of applicants, says Mediacorp
||Last Updated: 10/24/2011

Bombardier Aerospace, Dalhousie University, High Liner Foods and Winnipeg Airports Authority are just a few of the employers that made the 2012 Canada’s Top 100 Employers list.

To develop this year's list, Mediacorp Canada examined the recruitment histories of more than 75,000 employers across Canada that it tracks for its job search site, From this group, editors invited 12,000 of the fastest-growing employers to apply, plus another 5,000 companies and organizations in industries it wanted to examine more closely. More than 2,750 employers started this year's application process, with the final applicant pool up 15 per cent over last year's total.

"We received a record number of employer applications this year," said Richard Yerema, author of Canada's Top 100 Employers at Mediacorp Canada. "We saw double-digit growth from all regions of the country, across industry categories and especially from the public sector. We have been organizing this competition for 12 consecutive years and have never seen this level of attention from employers."

The surge in interest can be explained by Canada's labour market, where the unemployment rate in many key occupations is less than four per cent, said Tony Meehan, publisher at Mediacorp.

"The steady march of demographics is bringing many employers to the realization that they need to become more attractive places to work — not just to ensure future growth but simply to maintain the operations they have now."

Each winner is graded by Mediacorp on eight areas: physical workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.
