The key to retaining top high-tech employees is good management, not good salaries. Canadian IT workers consider compensation only the fifth most important factor for job satisfaction, according to
The Ottawa Business Journal
In a survey commissioned by Ottawa’s TalentMap.com of 6,000 high-tech workers from across Canada, the following aspects, in this order, were ranked higher than salary by IT employees:
•trust in the company’s leadership;
•pride in the organization;
•availability of lateral moves; and,
•provision of formal training.
The survey also revealed that overall job satisfaction had increased to 70 per cent as compared to 64 per cent a year ago. Sean Fitzpatrick of TalentMap.com said that, given the current economic climate, the increase is not surprising. What was surprising, however, is that, even with layoffs and uncertainty for IT employees, one in five workers is looking for a new job.
