Workplace fatalities jump in Nova Scotia

10 deaths from traumatic injuries, 22 from long-term injury or illness

HALIFAX (CP) — The number of workplace fatalities from traumatic injuries in Nova Scotia jumped to 10 in 2012-13, up from six during the same period a year earlier.

In its annual occupational health and safety report, the provincial government says there were also 22 workplace fatalities caused by a long-term injury or illness, which was up by one death from the report issued last year.

The report covers a period from April 1, 2012, to March 31, 2013.

Labour Minister Kelly Regan says the number of workplace deaths is too high.

The government has previously announced plans to increase the number of inspectors and add to its prosecution team on workplace safety.

The province says it increased the number of inspections last year.

It says safety officers conducted nearly 2,500 inspections, a record number for the province.
