These statistics were provided by Human Resources Development Canada.

Annual, global work-related deaths: More than 1,000,000

(More than the annual average number of deaths caused by traffic accidents, armed conflicts, violence and AIDS).

People affected by an occupational injury or illness in Canada each year: 800,000

People who die from an occupational injury or illness in Canada each year: 750

Average number of workplace-related deaths in Canada each year: 3 per day

Average cost in terms of compensation and indirect costs: $10-billion

Compensated injuries that involve young workers, aged 15 to 29: One-third of all compensated injuries involve young people. This makes young people the highest risk group.

The number of on-the-job accidents involving people 14 years of age or under has been increasing.
