Saskatchewan to Ontario: Send us your unemployed

Prairie province only one to see a drop in unemployment in January

In light of Ontario's dismal employment numbers last month, Saskatchewan is offering a ray of hope.

While Ontario lost 71,000 jobs and saw its unemployment rate jump from 7.2 per cent in December to eight per cent in January, Saskatchewan's unemployment rate fell from 4.2 per cent to 4.1 per cent — the only province to see such a decline.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall, who has been working to attract new workers to his province for a while, called the Toronto Star to issue an invitation to unemployed Ontario workers.

Wall cited the province's quality of life as a big draw but most importantly the province's online job board has 5,430 jobs that need to be filled, including hundreds of jobs in construction, agriculture, management, finance and administration, heath care, science, education, the arts, sales and manufacturing.
