B.C. reviewing employment standards

British Columbia is reviewing its employment standards legislation and the following topics in particular are under examination: minimum wage, enforcement of employment standards, increasing flexibility for employees and employers, and expediting hearings and determinations of complaints. Employers interested in providing views on these topics should stay alert to announcements about consultations.

Employment of persons with disabilities discussed in Nova Scotia

In early December, the Third Annual Symposium on Inclusive Employment and Education was held in Halifax. The benefits of hiring disabled persons and some of the obstacles they face in finding work were highlighted. Since other provinces in Canada have made moves to draft and enact legislation to assist employment for persons with disabilities, employers in Nova Scotia should be aware similar legislation may be coming to their province.

CRA payroll news

The Canada Revenue Agency has updated its “What’s New for Payroll” page at
www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/bsnss/tpcs/pyrll/whtsnw-eng.html. The page contains news about: T4A slip redesign, reporting of retiring allowances, a new tool for gifts and awards, pensionability of wage-loss replacement plan payments, new payroll deduction formulas, calculations and tables, a payroll deductions online calculator, payroll deductions tables and supplementary tables, cash-out rights of employee stock options, and automobile deduction limits and expense benefit rates for 2010.
