Oil-rich Calgary has nation’s highest family incomes

City surpasses Ottawa with median family income of $98,300

Calgary is Canada’s richest city in terms of median family income, according to data released Wednesday by Statistics Canada.

The resource-rich city overtook Ottawa for the highest median family income in 2012, rising from $93,410 the previous year to $98,300.

Ottawa-Gatineau had an average of $98,110 for the Ontario side, and $84,500 for the Quebec side.

Other major metropolitan areas where families can expect to be well-paid include Edmonton, with an average family income of $96,030, and Regina, with an average of $91,200.

The national average for 2012 came in at $74,540.

On the lower end of the spectrum, Abbotsford-Mission, B.C. had an average of $66,550, and Trois-Rivières, Que. had an average of $67,170.

St. Catherines-Niagara, Ont. and Sherbrooke, Que. came in at $68,410 and $68,700 respectively.

Major cities Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver were among the lower-paid cites, with median incomes slightly over $71,000 — all below the national average.
