More members for $100,000 club


Toronto — There were 42,527 Ontario civil servants and public sector employees who earned $100,000 or more last year, an increase of about 14,000 since 2005, according to a salary disclosure report. Paul Haggis, president and chief executive officer of OMERS Administrative, which oversees municipal employees’ pensions, tops the list at $2.24 million, followed by Ontario Power Generation president Jim Hankinson at $1.79 million. Employees from municipalities and the health-care and energy sectors dominated the list of top earners.



B.C. butts out

Victoria — Smoking rooms and smoking near workplace doorways, open windows and bus shelters in British Columbia was outlawed as of April 1. The City of Vancouver has also made it illegal for smokers to light up within six metres of building entrances and on outdoor patios. The city’s restaurant owners could face fines of up to $2,500 if patrons light up where they shouldn’t.



Quebec, N.S. hang up on drivers

Quebec and Halifax — Motorists in Quebec and Nova Scotia can no longer use hand-held cellphones as of April 1. Newfoundland and Labrador brought in the same ban in 2003, and Manitoba is considering a similar ban.



P.E.I. boosts minimum wage

Charlottetown — The minimum wage in Prince Edward Island will increase from $7.50 an hour to $7.75 on May 1. The rate will go up again to $8 an hour on Oct. 1.



IHRIM foundation promotes HR tech

Burlington, Mass. — A new foundation to promote research and education in HR information management has been formed by the International Association for Human Resources Information Management (IHRIM). The Human Resource Information Management Foundation will promote scholarships, research and education to drive innovation and the use of technology and information management in HR.
