Breach of trust between employer and employee warrants custody: Crown
A woman caught stealing from her employer in Summerside, P.E.I., has been sentenced to two months of house arrest.
Video surveillance caught Heather Rae Noonan, 21, selling merchandise below cost on several occasions. One time, she sold $114 worth of merchandise for just $4.
The video also showed her ringing in a purchase, giving change to the customer then voiding the purchase and pocketing the money
When confronted, Doucette wrote a note apologizing for her actions, saying she sold the merchandise at discount to a person she knew who was having trouble feeding her family. She also said she pocketed the cash to get her through until next pay.
The Crown said time in custody was warranted since the theft was a breach of trust between an employer and employee, adding it could be served in the community.
Judge Jeff Lantz of Summerside Provincial Court sentenced Noonan to house arrest and 12 months probation. He also ordered her to pay a $50 victim surcharge, write a letter of apology to her former employer, stay away from the store and pay $175 in restitution.
