Owner of Oakville, Ont. automotive shop refused to allow health and safety inspectors in during a surprise inspection
The owner of an Ontario automotive repair shop has been sentenced to seven days in jail and placed on probation for six months after he refused to let health and safety inspectors into the premises.
On Jan. 9, 2003, two Ministry of Labour inspectors arrived at Ace Automotive in Oakville, Ont., to conduct a routine, unannounced inspection of the premises. The owner prevented the inspectors from entering the workplace, contrary to the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The owner was “verbally abusive and intimidating toward the inspectors,” according to a press release put out by the Ministry of Labour.
The owner, who was not named by the Ministry of Labour, was convicted on May 3, 2005, for obstructing an inspector, contrary to s. 62(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The Ontario Court of Justice imposed the jail sentence and probation on Sept. 21, 2005.
