Feds to protect reservists' jobs

New legislation would also provide financial relief for student reservists

The federal government has proposed new legislation that would provide job protection to reservists who work for the federal public sector and in federally regulated jobs.

"The Government of Canada believes that reservists deserve to have job protection because supporting the men and women who serve Canada is the right thing to do to," said Minister of Labour Jean-Pierre Blackburn, who tabled the bill.

"It is important that we do everything we can to ensure that our reservists never have to worry about being penalized for serving our country."

The bill, which would also provide relief to student reservists, would make changes to the Canada Labour Code, the Public Service Employment Act, the Canada Student Financial Assistance Act and the Canada Student Loans Act.

The new legislation would protect the jobs of the 2,000 reservists who work for employers in federally regulated industries and the federal public sector.

It would also allow the 12,000 student reservists attending a post-secondary institution full time to retain their active student status so they don't accrue interest on their student loans or have to make loan payments while on active duty.
