Through rain, but not sleet or snow

Brampton, Ont. — A Canada Post worker who didn’t report to work because she didn’t want to drive in severe weather should have taken public transit, an arbitrator has ruled. Joanne Perucho filed a grievance because she was denied special paid leave when she didn’t come in because of freezing rain one day and a snowstorm another. On both days, all of the other staff in her 20-person department made it into work, although some were late.

Montreal — A VIA Rail worker demoted for a two-year period for refusing to abandon two workers almost 900 kilometres from home had his penalty reduced by an arbitrator. When two junior employees refused to accompany the passengers from New Carlisle, Que., to Gaspé, Que., on a bus, Réjean Martineau, a service manager, was ordered to revoke their rail passes. Neither worker had a way to get home to Montreal, so Martineau let them ride on the train back. The arbitrator called VIA’s decision to abandon the workers a “grave error.”
