Man dumped from chair, cook fired

Ituna, Sask., — A long-term care facility was justified in firing a cook who dumped an elderly resident out of his chair, an arbitrator has ruled. On June 30, 2006, Brian Watson-Colter, 61, came out of the kitchen after hearing a commotion in the dining room over seating arrangements. He told the resident to get out of the chair and, when he refused, Watson-Colter tipped the chair and the man fell to the floor. The facility, citing a zero-tolerance policy on resident abuse, fired him. The arbitrator said the actions were “reckless, rash and certainly lacked caution.” Since resident abuse was the most serious misconduct an employee could commit, dismissal was appropriate.
