Zellers worker fired for stealing chocolate from the trash

Quebec man fired just before Christmas, planned to give discarded candy to his kids as a present

A 47-year-old Quebec man who took chocolate bars from a garbage bin at a Zellers store was fired by the store just before Christmas.

Guy Masse said he was going to give the chocolate to his three young children as a Christmas present, according to published reports. Masse, who had only been at the store in St. Hyacinthe, Que. (about 50 kilometres east of Montreal) for a couple of months was suspended and then fired.

According to a report in the National Post, Zellers said Masse should have told his supervisor he was taking the chocolate out of the garbage.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation,” HBC spokeswoman Hilary Stauth told the Post.. “We would never have willingly let an associate go at this time of year without just cause. Unfortunately this associate breached the trust of his supervisors by removing merchandise from the store and, as a result, he was let go from his position.”
