Alleged voter suppression surfaces in Providence Care union vote

OPSEU reports suspicious phone calls to employees

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) is reporting that unidentified callers are telephoning workers at Providence Care in an effort to prevent them from casting their ballots in an upcoming union representation vote.

According to the union, a number of staff members at the Kingston-based organization have received calls from OPSEU numbers telling them they do not have to go to a polling station to vote, and can instead cast their vote online or by phone.

This is untrue, OPSEU stressed.

The union reports the calls appear to be coming from “cloned” union numbers.

“These kinds of dirty tricks have no place in Ontario,” said OPSEU president Warren (Smokey) Thomas.

“We want to make it crystal clear to all service and clerical staff and all registered nurses at Providence Care that the only way to vote for your union is to vote in person.”
