United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW), Local 1400 members working at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) locations in Regina and Saskatoon, signed a new collective agreement on May 9 that provides wage increases, language improvements.

The CNIB provides community-based support for blind individuals, as well as programs to enhance independence, safety and mobility after a loss of sight.

Highlights of the new four-year agreement include wage increases of two per cent in each year of the contract, greater notice of scheduling, reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a doctor’s note when a note is requested by the employer and expanded bereavement leave, said the union.

As well, workers will enjoy new language adding a dignity-and-respect clause, employer-provided cell phones for members requiring them and an expansion of the reimbursement for licenses, memberships and courses, said UFCW.

UFCW Canada Local 1400 represents more than 6,000 workers in Saskatchewan.
