Wage hikes, benefits paid by employer in new contract: UFCW
Employees at the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture (CCVT) in Toronto ratified their first collective agreement as union members on October 30.
The centre employs 32 full-time people who belong to United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Canada, Local 175.
The agreement includes wage increases for all employees of 1.5 per cent in each of the first four years of the agreement. In the fifth year, employees will receive a raise of 1.6 per cent. In addition, the agreement contains a letter of understanding to provide extra raises should the employer receive additional provincial or federal funding, says the union.
The union negotiating committee also achieved language providing union representatives access to the facility with no required advance notice, says UFCW.
The employee’s healthcare benefits will be fully paid for by the employer. Plus, the agreement provides for one paid float day, 12 paid sick days and three paid mental health days every year. The agreement respects the employees’ religious holidays as well, says the union.
