Workers at the Broadbent Institute in Ottawa ratified their first collective agreement on Feb. 22 that includes wage gains and enhanced vacation time.

Members at the institute work in fundraising, communications, policy analysis and advocacy for Canada’s leading progressive think tank and training institute, according to the employee’s union, the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada (UFCW).

“We are proud of the vital role that the Broadbent Institute members play in advocating for democracy, equality, and sustainability, and their commitment to building a progressive Canada for all,” said Wayne Hanley, president of UFCW, Local 1006A.

Highlights of the new agreement include wage increases over the life of the agreement and partial reimbursement for child care expenses in circumstances where a member is required to work overtime.

The deal also includes enhanced vacation time (four weeks after one year of service), negotiated pregnancy leave top-up, new language for sick days, personal days, statutory holiday coverage and leave of absence language for election leave for up to one term in office.

The contract protects benefit levels and adds a yearly retirement bonus, said the union.
