United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW) Canada, Local 175 members working at Foodland in Havelock, Ont., achieved a new union contract on April 23 that provides wage increases, better benefits and improved bereavement language.

The new collective agreement includes a new minimum wage plus scale for all employees to ensure that wage rates stay ahead of minimum wage and that employees receive any future increases applied to minimum wage as well, said UFCW.

Employees at the full-time top rate will see raises totalling $0.95 per hour over the term of the contract. Part-time employees at the top rate will receive a total of $0.90 per hour over the three-year term. The union negotiating committee also achieved language providing for union orientation to be completed on paid time, said the union.

A new vision-care benefit provides $200 per 24-month period and the uniform-pants allowance increases to $60 per year. Bereavement language now includes a celebration of life as a qualifying day that can be taken at a later date, said UFCW.

UFCW Canada Locals 175 and 633 represent more than 70,000 Ontarians in almost every sector of the economy.
