Comes after OLRB ruling during organizing drive: Union
Healthcare workers at Bayfield Manor in Kemptville, Ont., chose to join the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), Local 175 on Aug. 25.
Bayfield Manor is a nursing and retirement care residence that employs about 155 healthcare workers, including registered nurses (RNs), registered practical nurses (RPNs), personal support workers (PSWs), dietary aides, housekeeping, laundry aides and activities aides.
The Bayfield Manor workers became the newest members of UFCW 175 following a second union certification vote, said the union.
Last year, UFCW 175 filed a complaint (called a section 11) with the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB), claiming the employer interfered with the employees’ ability to organize, according to UFCW.
As a result, the labour board awarded UFCW three meetings with the employees and a second vote, said the union.
The Bayfield Manor workers join more than 10,000 healthcare workers who are represented by UFCW across Canada.
