Homes First staff back to work after four-week strike ends

New deal provides priority consideration for shifts, extra hours

Workers at Homes First Society in Toronto went back to work on March 17 after almost four weeks on strike.

The workers, members of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), have ratified a new three-year agreement, dating back to the previous agreement that expired in March 2012.

“These members have been unwavering in their determination to make Homes First a better work place,” said OPSEU negotiator Kathleen Demareski, “With this new contract in place, they can go back to work knowing they’ve succeeded and their struggle has paid off. What they have done has improved conditions for workers but also for the clients who depend on the services they provide.”

The new deal contains contract language that ensures staff can get priority consideration for shifts and extra hours. The deal also contains language on harassment and discrimination, which protects workers from bullying and psychological and sexual harassment.
